Julie & Stephen

They were married on the same date as they met, 5 years ago on a tour bus in Boston, which also happened to be Stephen’s birthday. Everything about this wedding was so personal and lovely, and I left feeling like I had just gained so many new friendships.

I want to note some of my favorite personal thoughts that they put into their celebration. Stephen would always get a bunny cake for his birthday, made by his mum. Julie & Stephen have been making each other bunny cakes for each other’s birthdays, and since they were married on Stephen’s birthday, there had to be a bunny cake! Keep and eye out for bunnies (they are hoping to adopt one soon!) and snowflakes throughout their wedding! They spend their free time on the mountain, so they honored her with snowflake boutonnieres, and 3 hidden snowflake charms (they love the number 3) in Julie’s dress. Julie sprained her ankle on Mt. Hood just a few days before their wedding, but she still managed to walk and dance in her gorgeous heels! Stephen is a Professional Lighting Director (for some cool bands you probably listen to!), and I was spoiled with incredibly awesome lighting that you would see at one of his shows. Julie really wanted to do portraits inside this rundown building by their house that they play frisbee in frequently, so Stephen made that happen.

Julie & Stephen - pre-wedding dinner

“She didn’t want an engagement ring”, Stephen told me. When they went to pick out their wedding bands, a pretty ring caught Julie’s eye. Stephen, of course, went back for it and decided to give it to Julie at the rehearsal dinner. Via the sushi train. I had to be there for this.

I met Julie and Stephen for the first time at this divey sushi joint back in December. I did not realize that it was one of their favorite spots, such a favorite that they decided to have their rehearsal dinner there. After yummy vegetarian sushi and drinks the party continued over at Ground Kontrol. This bar is the home to tons of old school arcade games, pinball, a wonderfully pac-man tiled bathroom floor, and of course, beer.

Rachel & Cort

Rachel & Cort are getting married in Portland this September with their reception being held at The Benson. We had a lovely afternoon last weekend walking around the Pearl District and the Portland Waterfront. One snap for now, and more to come!

instant wedding photographs

I am still on a high from what was this weekend, but I wanted to share a couple instant photos that I took at Julie & Stephen’s wedding in Portland, Oregon. I’ll just say this: If everyone met Julie & Stephen, the world would be a better place. I’ve read about weddings that move the photographer so much – couples changing their life and the way they think about photography and their business forever – this was that wedding for me. I never understood it before, but now I totally do. I love Julie & Stephen to bits! Full wedding post to come…

Foresty portraits

This is my friend Brooke, she *hates* having her photo taken, and I wanted to photograph her for this reason. For most of my couples, their first time getting a professional photograph taken is when we meet up for their engagement session. I hear comments like “I’m not photogenic!” or “I feel awkward in photos!” and try as I might to convince them they’re going to look awesome and not to worry, they still worry. It’s ok, that’s normal.

I wanted to photograph Brooke because I’ve never heard someone hate on photos of themselves more than her. I wanted to show her that she indeed looks kick-ass in photographs. I wanted her to see herself the way I see her.

Kristina & Steve

A couple weeks ago I had an itching to get to the fells with a couple because I had stumbled upon a cool spot while hiking with Emma. I was loving how black and white everything looked up there (we had a nice sunset to warm it up, though!), and thanks to trusty old Facebook, Kristina and Steve volunteered for me! It was another one of those times where I wanted to play with different types of film just for fun, and Kristina, Steve and their two pups Trigger and Tillie were awesome to work with. These two also *just* got engaged a few days ago, so a huge congratulations to them! 🙂

These are on Ektar, Portra 400 and Fuji FP-100.

Annmarie

Me and one of my 2012 brides had some fun in the forest a couple weeks ago. I played with a few different kinds of film (Lomo100 – the top two, Portra 800, Fuji FP-100 Instant Film, and Ektar). All for funsies.

Katie & Steve

Katie and Steve are such fun people, always up for an adventure. Katie is the best person Steve knows, and Steve is always making Katie laugh. Their happiness is infectious, and my cheeks were killing me on my drive home because they made me laugh so much! When I arrived to meet them at their wedding venue, Church Landing, they were ready to go out on the ice! I was slightly scared because it was 50 degrees out and it was hard to believe that the lake was frozen. There was an ice fishing derby happening that weekend and we decided to walk around the cute down of Meredith, NH before making our way to the ice. We walked over to a part of the lake where there were a lot of “huts” because we knew that area must be safe, right? Fishermen greeted us and helped us onto the ice and into their cookout where we were given beers and a warm fire! Yes! Katie and Steve’s fly-by-the-seat-of-their-pants attitude is exactly what I love about them.

I tried out a new kind of film this day that I quite like. It reminds me of Kodak Portra 160 VC.
