Danielle & Trey

Danielle & Trey were married at the Eagle Mountain House up in Jackson, NH . Dutch Bloemen Winkel brought some serious floral business to the table, ferns everywhere! All of Danielle & Trey’s friends and family members made us feel like we were guests, and it’s always so much fun when that happens!

Thank you to my first time second shooter Brittany, for shooting alongside me! I met her at a wedding I photographed in January. I love how you never know who you’ll meet at weddings. 🙂

Congratulations Danielle & Trey!

Courteney & David

Happy Friday, folks! Today I’m happy to share Courteney & David’s wedding with you! They were married last month at the Whispering Pines Conference Center down in West Greenwich, Rhode Island. What a weekend this was! Courteney & David’s friends and families were some of the funnest people I’ve been around. They’re those people who are always goofing off and being generally hilarious making everyone laugh. There is always one person at a wedding who is like this, but Courteney & David’s was chock-full of them! It kept me and my assistant laughing from start to finish. One of my favorite parts of the day was just before they had their first look. All of the ladies broke into a Disney song montage. How do they know ALL those words to every Disney movie song!? Impressive.

Thank you, Courteney & David, for having me along for the weekend! Here is a link to their photo booth images, in case you missed it!

Courteney & David

Courteney & David were married last month at Whispering Pines in Rhode Island. Because none of their friends or family members are from New England, they wanted to host a classic New England clam bake for their guests. I was asked to come along to photograph it, and it got me so much more excited for their wedding day! I could shoot at Whispering Pines every single weekend, the property is so beautiful with endless possibilities for photographs! It’s also dog-friendly, and their pup Wrigley was able to join in the celebration! I am going to share their wedding day with you tomorrow, so stick around! 🙂

Alex & Tyler

Alex & Tyler were married 1 month ago (happy monthiversary!) at the Wilde Memorial Chapel with a reception following at the Portland Company Marine Complex in Portland, Maine. I love returning to the Portland Company, it’s such an awesome space with so many great spots within the building. We started out the day at Alex’s parents house in Gray, where both Alex & Tyler got ready and had their first look. A huge special thank you to Sarah Goodwin of Daisies & Pearls for making sure the day went off without a hitch. Watershed Floral for the most peonies I’ve ever seen in one spot, and Fire & Co. for the amazing food and pizza truck!

Congratulations to Alex & Tyler!

Alex & Tyler

Alex & Tyler got married last month up at the Portland Company Marine Complex and I am excited to share their wedding with you very soon. They don’t live in New England, and Tyler had only just stepped off the plane shortly before I met up with them 2 days before their wedding at the Spring Point Ledge Light in South Portland. I make all of my couples get together with me before their wedding, even if it’s just for 20 minutes. It helps in a huge way get out any camera shyness anyone may be feeling. I’m so glad they were able to fit me in their crazy pre-wedding schedule!

This was one of those days where there was a huge storm for about 20 minutes just before we were scheduled to meet up. I’m super thankful for the weather app Dark Sky that I’ve been using for the last 2 seasons. It actually REALLY helps for a wedding day. I knew I didn’t have to cancel our shoot because it’s oddly accurate down to the minute. In New England we rarely have amazing lighting conditions, but I had never seen light like this. Pictures don’t even do it justice! I was pretty much falling overmyself about how amazing the light was, complete with misty foggy horizon. I know this is pretty common most other places in the country, particularly the pacific northwest, but it is so rare here. I wanted to hug and kiss it, and never let it leave.

Congratulations Alex & Tyler!

Zach & Genevieve

Zach & Vieve. So. I met Zach & Vieve back in 2011. Zach emailed me because he and his girlfriend were moving to Boston from Seattle so she could attend PT school. Also a photographer, Zach wanted to be my assistant and second shoot with me. Once they made the road trip here, we met up at a coffee shop in Charlestown where I was currently living to talk logistics. Unbeknownst to me Vieve was somewhere in the background to make sure I wasn’t a creeper! Zach and I hit it off immediately and he second shot for me a TON that season while he finished off school. It just goes to show you that sometimes when people go out on a limb and email you out of the blue, they might just become some of your best friends. Over the years they were in Boston we hung out all the time. They hosted many deck parties at their place in Cambridge, and we went on some fun camping trips together. Good friends are ones who have seen you at your absolute worst, and don’t see you as any different from before. That is who Zach & Vieve are.

Zach called me on NYE of 2013 to alert me of their engagement, and I was so excited for them! They are so perfect for each other. They’re the kind of couple who you hang out with and you’re like “duh”. They make sense.

I miss you both so super much. I love you both so super much. <3 To see the photobooth images just follow this link!

Mathilda & Pete

Mathilda & Pete were married last month at the Old South Meeting House followed by a killer party at the Downtown Harvard Club right in the heart of Boston. I had so much fun getting to know these two over the last year, and they both have really wonderful friends & families. Between Mathilda’s mother’s outfit and Pete’s brother’s ridiculously great singing voice, all I knew is I wanted to be around these people.

You’ll never see a happier groom than Pete. Just wait and see for yourself! A huge thank you to my best friend Abby for tagging along with me on this day – some of her photos are sprinkled in down below.

Congratulations, Mathilda & Pete!

Chelsea & Mike

Ok ok ok… I know I say this a lot. But! I am going to say it again. I am really super grateful for the people that my job puts me next to. Chelsea & Mike met in college at UConn while they were doing a project having to do with a type of bird. This involved sitting on a log for countless hours watching this bird, and taking notes. That is where they fell in love. They aren’t the kind of people who subscribe to a CSA and call themselves “eco-friendly”. These two are the real deal. They’re the dirt-loving, chicken raising, bunny nuzzling, growing all of their own food types. They are currently floating around, moving to wherever opportunity presents itself and seeing what happens. Recently a job brought them from Connecticut to South Dakota where Mike got a job at Custer State Park. I loved listening to them talk about the woods, their homestead and what drives them. They know that their relationship with each other is top priority and it shows. That’s a big deal. Not everyone is able to do that.

They asked me to come out and photograph their lives as they are now, because they know this won’t be forever. We even talked about having this be a yearly thing wherever they are (hell yes!).

Because I had never been to SD, we decided to tack on a few days and try backpacking out in the Badlands. I mention this because of all people we told in South Dakota of our plans to backpack for 3 days for the first time ever in one of the harshest places known to man (there is a reason it’s called the badlands), they were the only ones who said “ah, you’ll be great! Need to borrow anything?” rather than “are you nuts?!”. I love you guys. I cannot wait to see you AGAIN for your wedding in September at the West Mountain Inn in Vermont!

Portugal

Now that wedding season is fully underway I wanted to take a second to blog some of my favorite images from a recent trip I took to Portugal. 2015 has definitely kicked some major ass on the travel front. I’ve been away more than I’ve been home thanks to this awesome job of mine, but I’ve had little time in between for reflection. I decided before I head off to Seattle on Friday for a wedding, I should actually look at the images Richard Photo Lab processed for me a few weeks ago. When I travel, I only bring one film camera with me. This is for a few reasons: 1. My digital cameras are my work cameras. They’re too big and heavy for the type of traveler I am (I like to spend hours hiking up steep cliffs and stay in questionable accommodations). 2. I would feel compelled to take time making sick photographs of everything around me when what I really want to do is meet cool people, breathe in the air, smell, taste, feel. I always keep my Nikon OneTouch with me (a 35mm point & shoot) and my camera flavor of the week has been my Minolta Autocord for a couple of years now. It’s very small, lightweight, has very few options and of course it’s an adorable twin-lens reflex that turns into a conversation starter. Unfortunately for me, my Autocord fell out of the back of the car one day, knocking the mirror loose. I was pretty mad for about 10 minutes, because I love taking portraits of people I meet while traveling and then sending them to them. For the whole month I only took 3 portraits of awesome Portuguese people that I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to. Eventually I acquired a mini-screwdriver (all the way from Boston, thanks Rob!) and was able to fix it for the last week of the trip.

Why Portugal? Last summer, my friend Lara and I were at her lake house for the 4th of July and decided we should work from somewhere else for a month. I told this story on my Instagram account before we left, but the long and short of it is: We are self employed. We have the ability to create our own schedules. March is typically not super popular month for our job. Why not go somewhere? We talked about a lot of places, but the main reason we ended on Portugal was that it was cheap, safe, and beautiful. That was enough for us!

Our original plan was to rent a house for a month on AirBnb and work from there. I’m not sure how our plans unraveled from that to what we ended up doing. I’m going with lack of planning and both of our schedules never lining up because next thing we knew it was January and we hadn’t planned a THING. We decided to book 4 nights in a hostel in Lisbon and wing it once we got there. This was pretty exciting to me because I hadn’t stayed in a hostel since college in Fiji and I loved it then! The hostel in Lisbon was unlike any hostel I’ve ever stayed in. Had we not stayed there and met the people we met, our entire trip would have been totally different. We ended up meeting people there our first day (who also arrived around the same time) who became our travel family. There was a core group of 4 or 5 of us and we’d weave others in and say goodbye as they left. We ended up in Lisbon for 7 nights, Porto for 6, Gerês for 2, Douro Valley for 1, Madeira for 5, Praia da Luz in the Algarve for 3, back up to Porto for 3, then back to Lisbon for 4. I think. I just want to give a major shout out to our travel family: Tarcio (Brazilian), without you we would have never been able to ask for the bill correctly (and MANY MANY more things). Simon (German), thanks for being into climbing mountains as much as me. Alan (Brazilian), you have a beautiful voice. I hope to hear you sing one day. Lucian (Belgian), I’m glad we all drank so much vinho tinto together and you got us to move on to Porto with you! Please send me some 13mm fries! Chris (German), thanks for being nice to me even though I made you attempt to pronounce “squirrel” a million times. Danielle, Emilio, Massimo (Italian). You guys just get a giant PARABOLA!

All of the square images below we shot on my Minolta Autocord with Kodak Ektar 100 film. The images that are non-square were from the Nikon OneTouch, and also Kodak Ektar 100.

Jo & Ryan

Last weekend I went down to Brooklyn to visit Jo & Ryan! I met most of my 2015 wedding couples through skype this time, so it has been wonderful to start meeting people in person. We’re all starting to realize that there is no more snow causing us to want to hunker down or cancel travel plans. This day was particularly windy if you can’t tell, but that just made for more snuggly photos! Just as I like it. Jo & Ryan are getting married this summer at Dimond Hill Farm up in New Hampshire, where Jo grew up. Thanks for having me you two, I am looking forward to seeing you again in July!
